Business Mentoring & Coaching Case Study

A 60 bedroom developer and owner run property 4 star property, in a rural location built to a very high specification, had levels of business coming into the hotel which were very low and well below expectations. There was a very poor understanding of overall hotel operations and hotel marketing and sales The hotel was fully staffed, however there was a high level of staff and management under-performance.

We commenced mentoring the owner on hotel operations and expected returns. We acted as a coach to the marketing executive and provided clear guidance on how to market and sell the property. In conjunction with the hotel owner we agreed on the overall strategic direction of the hotel. Monthly meetings were set up with the hotel’s key management, chaired by us and objectives were set and measured. We also met with the property owner separately on a monthly basis and reviewed the developments.

We created a comprehensive marketing and sales plan for the hotel. This plan was then implemented by the hotel’s marketing executive, which was closely monitored by us, often with daily communication. Marketing events were attended jointly by the hotel and us to generate further business.

The business began to operate as a co-ordinated hotel. The owner of the property saw a clear direction for the property and thus could see how to develop the business in the future. The results of the coaching and mentoring were evident with occupancies in excess of 70% for Summer 2008, when similar operators were suffering much lower occupancies.
